Here I am wide awake on my first day in India. I arrived at night so oly time today to rest and anticipate. I am excited for the adventure and I am scared of the unknown tomorrow will bring. One of the opportunities I have of being in a strange place is that it teaches me moment by moment I need to stop thinking about me and remember HIM the One true God who sent me is here with me in this foreign land.
As I arrived at the airport tonight I found it beautiful and stately. Ordained with beautiful Mudras art, clean crisp photos and dramatic glass walls. All the signs were easy to follow and everything was clearly marked. As we ventured outside to wait for our ride the air hit me thick and damp. It reminded me of the butterfly house at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. There was no odor I was warned about here in New Delhi, perhaps it is because my arrival follows that of a cleansing rain that has just passed through.
Eventually our ride arrived in a nice mini van. I was trying to escape being in a mini van for a while but perhaps this is one time I was glad to be in a nice safe large minivan. At first the driver sitting on the wrong side actually the right side of the car took some getting used to. I was quickly distracted by my right sided driver by his driving ! Everyone's driving or lack of. I am not usually on that is all about rules but being married to a CHP, I am a big fan of auto safety rules. I was alone in my appreciation of the dangers of the road. No one wears seat belts here, people pile in the back of any truck or motor cycle, lane lines are merly a suggestion (we were spliting lanes more than we were in them). The roads are shared with bicyclist, many motorcyclist, pedestrians rig shawls, large commercial trucks and many mini sized and comact cars, vans and buses all driving as if it was a video game and he who got through first woudld win No Rules driving ! I was suprised how calm I stayed. I did not even get car sick on that 35 minute roller coster ride to out flat.
Our arrival at the flat was even more appreciated as I got to get out off the crazy ride.
The flat is really a 3 bedroom 3 bath apartment sent up to accomidate about 12 people. And apparetnly one very large cock roach that was waiting for us when we arrived. He is now dead, I know my first hours in country and I kill a living thing and offend 80% of the population. I will risk it I am not rooming with cockroaches.
With only 4 of us in this flat I am blessed with my own room and bathroom. The building the flat is in on the ground floor is one flat of many many flats, residences stacked several stories high with many generations of a family living in each small flat. I felt grateful to have my own space in a city of 15 million and a country of over 1 billion. I have my own room to pray, perpare, and stay connested with home. Tonight arrive after sun down as we veturred through the city it was too dark for me to really take in my surroundings. Even from my room I can not see my surroundings as my windows are barred and padlocked with thick wooden storm shutters. So I will get ready to call it a day a take it all in when the sun rises. In the stillness of my room I can hear to honking horns and the whistles of the traffic officers blowing, they are being drowned out by ceiling fan and my spinning head as anticipates what tomorrow will teach me. I should be sleeping... 1:53 am
